5 examples of designer pain: the most common phrases coming from customers and clients

No matter how many years have passed, and TK for the designer always remains a topic of discussion. Yes, what! Everything can be perfectly painted: what kind of pictures, fonts, colors, icons, buttons, etc. are needed. But rarely when the customer understands what he will get in the end. The fact is that each person has his own design formed in his head. The customer has one, the designer the other, Vasya Ivanov the third. Sometimes it takes hours to understand what exactly the client wants. It seems that you figured it out, just understood the essence of the technical task and worked out every detail. It remains only to send the finished layout and wait for praise from the customer, how smart and creative you are. Alas … In fact, it turns out that the client did not want this at all. Why? “Make the logo larger”, “let’s try to change the color”, “turn the photo in the other direction” … Yeah, somewhere we’ve heard that before. =)

We present to your attention the top 5 phrases that will make even the most seasoned designer cry and will figure out what each of them actually hides. Let’s start with the classics …

Play around with fonts
There is not a single designer in the world who does not know these games. Of course, you cannot “play” with fonts. They can be replaced, corrected style, tracking, kerning, etc. Just this phrase is so commonplace that even no one ever wondered who invented it. The designer, as a rule, has several sets of fonts that he uses for most projects. It is not necessary to think that if any intricate font is used on your site, you will be different from competitors and users will reach for you. No, rather the opposite, it will scare them away. All well-known and popular sites – Google, Yandex, Facebook, VKontakte use the simplest fonts. And this does not stop them from having multimillion attendance.

Sent logo in Word
If you want to place your logo on the site, then you need to send it to the designer in a vector as a separate file. Vector images are intended for computer graphics and are easily adaptable. Logos in the Word are often sent by customers along with TK. That is, right in the file itself, under the item “Company logo”, a picture is inserted. It is impossible to use this kind of logo anywhere, since often the image has a low resolution. The most common customer options are jpg and png. Yes, they can be copied and saved as a separate file. But the fact is that these are raster formats. When you scale the image data, their quality will be lost. Even if the whole site is executed according to all the canons of ideal design ideas, a bad logo on the main page will spoil the overall impression clearly.

Make white lighter
… black is not so funereal, red is selling, green is friendlier, and gray is more catchy. In general, when it comes to finding the right color, for the designer this is one of the most important tasks. With the help of color, we convey the necessary emotions, feelings and act on the subconscious of users to perform an action. Properly selected color is a guarantee of brand recognition and its attractiveness to the consumer. Therefore, designers with a greater degree of responsibility approach this issue: they build a single composition, color harmony and compatibility. If you change at least one shade in the project, you will have to change all the others. After all, the designer did not just choose these combinations, guided by anything. Therefore, do not chop off the shoulder – change red to blue, purple to yellow, and green to gray-brown-raspberry.

In theory, of course, you can bring this idea to life. While the format is jpg, psd will look the same. Any image in Photoshop will not decompose by itself into separate layers. The designer just needs to redraw it again, otherwise it is not suitable for layout. And what’s the most annoying – the client really begins to doubt our design skills. In general, with regard to converting one format to another, it is better to first check if this is possible. The psd format contains several elements (inscription, figure, picture), each of which can be distinguished separately. It is possible to convert a file from psd to jpg, on the contrary, it is impossible.

We had a case when a client asked to convert a site layout in psd format to MS Word format! And all this so that his wife could “play around with flowers.” We have nothing against Microsoft Word, this is the most universal text editor and, yes, some manage to collect logos in it (we haven’t seen that before). But he will not be able to open a multi-layer layout. Therefore, the client had to politely explain the essence of the situation, and his wife to continue further “play with flowers” in Paint. =)
